Hutton Woods Jet Mines

Two entrances to Jet workings are located around Bold Venture Gill. The workings extend perhaps 20m in a grid pattern.

The tunnels are large enough to stand upright in and have very few collapsed areas.

This second set of jet working located nearby are much more unstable, three holes surrounded by fencing have opened up. The floor inside is littered with collapses and it can only be a matter of time before they totally collapse.

This whole area of the woodland shows much evidence of collpases from jet workings just below the surface and many more must still exist.

  1. Last time I looked, open Jet mines cound be found either direction, for quite a distance, of the well known twin enterance mine above Bold Venture Gill. Below Hanging stone was another good location. Access was very difficult in some cases and some were very dangerous. Also there was a large iron stone drift enterance above Hutton Village.

  2. Has anyone got any information on the Hutton ironstone mines? From reading around the subject I know a bit about Belmont phase 1 and phase 2, and the Slapewath/Spawood projects, but have little information about Hutton and what is present today etc. Any help anyone?

  3. I was up Guisborough woods today and saw over 10 different entrances including the ones pictured/lead to the above. There are lots covering a wide area, most look very unstable so didn’t venture in. Walked past most of them many times without realising they were so close. Keep up the good work, great site.

  4. Has anyone heard of the spook mine at top of Hutton village bank and to the right and abit round the corner
