The Vulcan Street wall is a very impressive structure, hidden away in a neglected part of Middlesbrough, it dates from 1887 and is the southern wall of the Cleveland Salt Works, and also near the site of the 1841 Bolckow Vaughan Ironworks.

  1. I am not sure where I might have read it, but believe there may have been a famous(?) foundry in this area called the Vulcan Street Foundry? Any help anyone?

    • Bruce
      Matthew,
there was a Vulcan foundry at Newton Le Willows that produced railway llocomotives, many of which served on Teesside ( W.D. Austerity and J 94 tank engine )

  2. Continuing my TV appearance theme:

Also appearing on ‘Auf Wiedersehen Pet’ on Tuesday night, ITV4…….

  3. I have just read somewhere that this wall is a reconstruction of three sections of wall surrounding the salt works, the three sections being dismantled and then reguilt together to form one long wall. Does anyone know whether this is correct? It would account for the three different commemorative plaques.

  5. The wall is on the route Boro supporters walk to the Riverside Stadium (home of Middlesbrough FC). It use to form part of Cleveland Salt Works who produced nearly a million tons of salt during it’s 60 year existence. Nearby was Bolckow Vaughan’s first ironworks and the Middlesbrough Pottery.
