The site is vast and over 11,000 people are buried under the park including Sir Hugh Gilzean Reid (founder of the Evening Gazette), ironmaster John Gjiers and the children of ironmasters Bolckow and Vaughan.
A great deal of research has been done into the site by Steve Waller which you can read about on the Northern Echo and Evening Gazette websites.
Amazing theres currently absolutely nothing in the way of signs or memorials, so its unfortunately another example of Middlesbrough forgetting its past.
Thanks to Peter Edwards for pointing this one out, there may still be a display in the entrance of the Teesside Archives, but I don’t know if its still there.
There was definately headstones still on the site up until the mid 80’s I was born in 78 but I remember walking into town with my mum as a kid and seeing heads leaning up against the boundary wall to the church
I was born in 82 and I remember headstones in there. Also some lined up against the wall
Bolckow and Vaughan are buried in St Cuthberts graveyard in Marton arn’t they ?
They certainly are, but this gentlemans research mentions their children.
(i’m afraid it didn’t specify which ones)
No fair, I finally get onto the trace of a relative just to find that there’s no longer anyway to see where they’re buried. Just typical for my family.
Hi Sarah I have just read your message dated 2012 re; Tracing relatives.If they are buried at Ayresome Gardens the info is in Teesside Archives and there are ways of locating a plot for this cemetery without markers.If you would like some help please let me know as I worked on this project alongside Steve Waller for 3 years. Dear Anne, I am researching my great grandfather, William Hall Burnett (www.williamhallburnett.uk). I am pretty certain that his mother Hannah Burnett was interred in the Old Linthorpe Cemetery on the 13th October 1858, she was 61 years old. Any good reference to the history of Ayresome Gardens/Old Linthorpe Cemetery and a location of her burial spot would be great. kind regards David Burnett
Hy David Burnett, so sorry but I have only just found your message it’s only two years down the line.However I have looked in the list of Monumental Inscriptions compiled in 1978 before the Headstones were removed but unfortunately there is no Burnett listed, but that could mean that they never had a Headstone.You can of course contact Teesside Archives tel; 01642 248321as they hold a list of burials on C/D.I can guide you to a plot as I have photo copies of the layout or you if you require further help please feel free to email me on ann_thirsk@yahoo.co.uk Kind Regards Ann Thirsk
