  1. 42 WW1 names, and from a working class community – only one a commissioned officer. I can guess this meant a lot of resentment in the intervening years towards Alf Myers, the local Methodist lay preacher and mines deputy who was a leading CO in the conflict. As an aside I recall especial care being taken by Cleveland CC’s engineers to underpin the memorial when the straightening out of the A174 was underway in the very early 1980’s.
