Rock Hole Alum Quarry was started by John Atherton of Skelton Castle in 1604 and was the earliest in the district and the first success works in the whole country.

    This quarry has not been idle for hundreds of years
    I reopened it in the 1990s to quarry stone to form the embankment on Guisborough By Pass.

  2. Clive usher now living at Charltons. Visits to Quarry with dogs, I did’nt recognise the site that I used to watch the motorbike trials in the 60’s. Having read the history about stones used for the guisborough by-pass, now the difference is explained. Cheers
