Blatherwick Terrace Sign, Lord Street, Redcar

Situated on what is now Lord Street.

The houses don’t exist on the 1895 map, and by 1915 its just named Lord Street, so this must have been a fairly shortlived name.

  1. I have come across this in a number of places in the country where a group of houses, usually terraced houses are built on a road.

The road is given a name and the terrace of houses is given a different name. In this case the word “Terrace” only applies to the group of houses and does not apply to the whole road.

    • Am putting together a visual town quiz/tour for a ladies church group(July). Heard somewhere that John or Thomas Blatherwick was originally a beachcomber who managed to get enough money to start out as a builder. Above seems to have been his only enterprise. Would like to know more but that’s all I’ve got.
