This stone is Grade II Listed and thought to date from the early 18th century
I must have passed this hundreds of times and never noticed the inscription before.

You have to ask, who was Rosedale and why did he ride north?
I think we’re looking at a variant spelling of ‘Road’
As in, its the road thats at the north end of Rosedale.
