This stone block near the Italian Garden originally had spa water from a nearby spring piped to it, with metal cups for drink from.

The fountain now stands dry with two recesses for the pipes.

  1. I have a feeling I know where the source is and would love to see the two reconnected and water once again flowing. How many plastic bottles this would save as well as giving and I quote “health giving waters”

    • The water supply is to the right of the stone. As you face the river. Identified by the red coloured stones. Dig around as spring bubbles up and you will find a wrought iron grill. I come here often it is a magical place of my childhood

  2. I seem to remember that the spring was restored in the late 90’s and for a brief period, water could be drawn from the stone. Unfortunately this was short-lived and after vandalism from the local miscreant youth the stone was moved from its water source to its current location.

  3. The water source is still there if you face the river, the spring is to your right, you will see reddish coloured stones due to Iron in water. The stone was moved many years ago away from its water suppy to where it is now placed. So the stone is not where the Victorians placed it. I am from Saltburn and played for many hours in this area and remember drinking from one remaining metal cup on this fountain.
I am 67 now and have fond memories of my home Saltburn. Elaine Ord nee Fawcett and Davis
