George Duck (and his descendants) ran the butchers in Grosmont from 1820, the date being engraved into the front of this shop.

This sign is towards the rear of the current Saltburn fire station on Leven Street.

I don’t know how long the company ran, but there is a William Biscomb operating as a joiner in Bulmer’s Directory of 1890 but not at this location.

These old shop signs have been revealed by recent work on 17 Milton Street.

Immediately next to yesterdays ‘Sparrow’ plaque is one dated many years later in 1947.

This is one that’s intrigued me since my childhood, cemented to the wall of a house in Staithes.

The hero of a hundred fights
Died March 1901

‘Spadger’ is a slang term for a sparrow.
Another smaller stone carries the name ‘Fred’

Red Lion Ghostsign, Guisborough

This sign relates to the opening times of the pub during the livestock mart, as far as I can tell a pub called the Red Lion existed here until around 1970.

Stockton and Darlington Railway Centenary Plaque, Yarm

This plaque was erected by the residents of Yarm in 1925 on the 100th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway.

It lists the residents of Yarm involved. Thomas Meynell (Chairman), Benjamin Flounders,(a quaker industrialist) Jeremiah Cairns (listed as Meynells steward and agent), Richard Miles (a quaker lead agent) and Thomas Miles.
A engraving of ‘Locomotion No.1’ is at the top.

This old sign is in remarkably good condition on the pale Pease bricks.

The shop below is now a Boots, suggesting it got bought out into a chain at some point.
The journals of David Taylor have him working as an errand boy there in 1906.

Middleton Taylor’s manufacturing Chemists and Pharmacists of Station Street, Saltburn, that was my place of employment. The shop is still a chemists, now owned by Mr Langman

Melliships Tiles, Saltburn

This mosaic doorway stands outside what is now Keith Sports, but was once the Saltburn grocer, wine and spirit merchant of W. Melliship.
