Lady Cross, near Egton

For most people on the way to Whitby, Lady Cross is a signpost for a caravan park, but there is a small wayside cross at the road junction.

The inscriptions are heaving eroded, so its difficult to make out any names or dates.

Swarth Howe Cross

Swarth Howe Cross is a boundary stone rather than a religious cross, it does stand near Swarth Howe burial mound.

The back is though to carry the inscription “Egton Road”, but its hard to make out.

F.W. Thompson Ghostsign, Ampleforth

This sign is probably at the distance limit of what I like to post, but it was such a nice example.

There are multiple version of the sign for F.W. Thompson & Son, Provisions Merchant. Established 1860.
The London Gazette has them going into liquidation in 1964.

Rowntree Printers Ghostsign, Marske-by-the-Sea

Despite being heavily weathered, it appears to say “Rowntree Printers”

I don’t know when they closed, but the ‘CLEVELAND AND TEES-SIDE CRICKET LEAGUE. OFFICIAL HANDBOOK 1948’ was printed by F.A.Rowntree, Jubilee Printing Works, Marske-by-Sea

Stockton & Darlington Railway Sign, Nunthorpe

Nunthorpe railway station was originally on the Stockton & Darlington Railway Middlesbrough to Guisborough line.

The line opened in 11 November 1853 as a freight line for the Hutton Ironstone mines near Guisborough.

The passenger station was not opened until February 1854, all properties on this line owned by the company carried a “B” number

This foundation stone was laid by Ald. Isaac Fidler. Mayor of Middlesbrough 24 October 1883. G.G. Hoskins F.R.I.B.A Architect. E. Atkinson. Contractor

Isaac Fidler was 28th Mayor and appears to have been a stonemason. A capsule exists under the foundation which contains a map of the town, corporation year book, coins, newspapers and a copy of Middlesbrough and Its Jubilee .

The ballfinial stone on the spire of the tower of these buildings was fixed by councillor Thomas Sanderson, Mayor of Middlesbrough, 29 December 1887. G.G. Hoskins F.R.I.B.A Architect. E. Atkinson. Contractor

This town hall and municipal buildings were opened by their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales 23rd January 1889. Raylton Dixon Esq J.P.D.L. Mayor. George Bainbridge Esq, Town Clerk. G.G. Hoskins Esq F.R.I.B.A Architect.
Middlesbrough Town Hall

The Prince and Princess of Wales in 1889 became King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1901. Raylton Dixon was a shipbuilder and 34th Mayor of Middlesbrough.

This stone near the base of a wall on North Road bears the date 1893, I have no idea of its origins or if it came from another building.
