The last one i’ve seen, on Park Avenue. Has a makers mark of Needham Stockport.

I would imagine this one is later than the ones in Coatham as the area would have been developed around 1920-1930

The photo was taken a few years ago before the redevelopment of Coatham Enclosure, it looks like the pipe was removed during that work.

The mill race started at a pair of breached dams to the west of the viaduct.

It runs along the north bank of the beck, alongside the modern footpath. There appear to be some remains here relating to a time water still flowed.

The ditch that remains continues east towards the mill site where there are some markers for a long forgotten Marske Mill trail.

These furnace bases are some of the few remains left of the ironmasters district.

There is a disagreement between the notice board on site and a Cleveland Industrial Archaeology Report from 1979.

The CIAS report states Bernhard Samuelson built five furnaces known as the “old side” 1864 – 1867 and three more known as the “new side” in 1869 -1871. The notice board says the remains are the three ‘new side’ blast furnaces built in 1874.

The ironstone used here was mined in the Slapewath / Spa Wood area.
