Cheers to Chris Martin for the information about this additional obelisk, like the two sets in Eston it bears the inscription “Cleveland Ironstone Eston Mines” this one is actually in better condition than all the others.

Not the greatest photos as only had my mobile phone.

Anyone know of any more obelisks ? I believe there used to be another to the North of South Bank, towards the river.

Following on from my previous obelisk post I went out to photograph the two ironstone obelisks on the site of the old Eston miners hospital.

They were removed when the hospital was demolished in 1980 and returned in 2004. They are identical to the two outside the town hall, so i’m unsure where these two went or if there were four at the town hall ?

This small stretch of wall is built from the tuyeres, which allowed air into the Bessemer converters of the Eston Steelworks.

Outside the council offices on Fabian Road are two ironstone obelisks, reported to be 2.5 tonnes in weight.

The inscriptions say ‘Cleveland Ironstone Eston Mine’

A 2004 news report that says the pillars were moved to the site of the old hospital, so perhaps there are two more ?

UPDATE : As of the demolition of the council office in 2012 the obelisks have moved from this location.

Lady Hewleys Drift – Eston Hills

The location of the ironstone drift is now the site of pond, presumably filled with water still flowing from the mine workings.

The Lady Hewleys Trust is actually still in existance today.

Eston Nab – Iron Age Hill-fort and Napoleonic Beacon

The remain of earthworks surrounding the Iron Age Fort are still very prominent on the ground.

Tees Archaeology have produced an excellent leaflet on the subject here.

The Napoleonic Beacon was built in 1808 as part of a chain to warn of attack.

The actual watchtower appears to have been built and little later around 1819/1820 (thanks to Joan for the additional information), that later became a private residence and was inhabited up until the 1950s.

Keith Electric Fan, Eston Mines

By the side of the tramway that runs through the woods from the Eston mines are the remains of the Keith Fan House, it was used to ventilate an area of workings near the Lowther drift.

On the side of one of the concrete foundations is the inverted impression of company name.

The location i’ve given is only approximate, but its easily located walking along the tramway.

Electric Sub-station Wilton Lane (demolished September 2008).

This substation building was built in 1914 next to the tramway between the Eston and Chaloner ironstone mines and was one of the few standing remains left from the Eston mines.

Although you’ll not see it any more as it was apparently demolished in the last couple of days.

This was an easy one for me as i’m now walking past it on my way into work every day at Corus Steel House.

The plaque has seen better days, but it says the 9 tonne block was extracted from the Eston mine in 1850 and stood outside the head offices of Bolckow & Vaughan until 1982.

This extremely heavily built stucture is virtually all thats left around the Trustee Drift site, the outside has likely been a haven for underage drinking for decades.

There are two (very dark and dirty) rooms to be explored inside.
