UPDATE : As of August 2012 the scupture has been removed. I don’t know whether it will return to the sea-front when the redevelopment is completed.
Show on map I can find no details about this little character perched up in a birds nest, any info would be gratefully received.
The mast is a half-scale replica of HMS Redcar, a ‘Racecourse’ class minesweeper that was sunk on 24th June 1917 near Dover.
 
Update 2/3/2011 : The mast and most of the old tourist information centre were demolished today. It looks like the plaques were taken away beforehand, hopefully the little cat was rescued too !
Show on map This Type 23 pillbox is visible in a field beside the Trunk Road between Redcar and Middlesbrough.
 
The pillbox is under threat of destruction due to the re-development of the area.
The council development plan says :- “The World War II Pill box should be retained on the site, if possible, or buried in situ, otherwise it should be recorded prior to demolition.” As that particular area is pencilled in for shops/pubs/takeaways, I strongly suspect the latter will be the outcome. The land itself that the farm stood on was owned by the Lady Hewley Trust, giving it a link back to the Eston ironstone mines.

UPDATE 10/08/2011 : Drove past this morning and sadly it looks like the pillbox has recently been removed as I strongly suspected it might.
Show on map This substation building was built in 1914 next to the tramway between the Eston and Chaloner ironstone mines and was one of the few standing remains left from the Eston mines.
Although you’ll not see it any more as it was apparently demolished in the last couple of days.
Show on map No idea if the French chalk graffiti underneath the Regent was done officially by the film crew or just spontaneous by the extras, its long since disappeared and been replaced by the modern variant.

One small scrap of it remains outside the Corus Steel House offices near Redcar.
Show on map The huge deserted site of Steetleys Magnesite works in Hartlepool, partly demolished and partly a huge adventure playground for the local kids. Hardly a fence to be found and definitely no security in sight.
Vast tanks, uneartly blue lagoons, a 200ft chimney, a pier.
View this on the map to see the vast scale of the place. Catch it before its demolished and probably turned into “luxury flats”
UPDATE :
The chimney was demolished on 29th July 2012, the pier has already been cut to stop access and I believe many of the pools have now been demolished too. So i’m moving this into the ‘Too Late’ category
