This foundation stone was laid by Ald. Isaac Fidler. Mayor of Middlesbrough 24 October 1883. G.G. Hoskins F.R.I.B.A Architect. E. Atkinson. Contractor

Isaac Fidler was 28th Mayor and appears to have been a stonemason. A capsule exists under the foundation which contains a map of the town, corporation year book, coins, newspapers and a copy of Middlesbrough and Its Jubilee .

The ballfinial stone on the spire of the tower of these buildings was fixed by councillor Thomas Sanderson, Mayor of Middlesbrough, 29 December 1887. G.G. Hoskins F.R.I.B.A Architect. E. Atkinson. Contractor

Thomas Sanderson was 33rd Mayor.

This town hall and municipal buildings were opened by their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales 23rd January 1889. Raylton Dixon Esq J.P.D.L. Mayor. George Bainbridge Esq, Town Clerk. G.G. Hoskins Esq F.R.I.B.A Architect.

The Prince and Princess of Wales in 1889 became King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1901. Raylton Dixon was a shipbuilder and 34th Mayor of Middlesbrough.

There are a large variety of plaques in the park associated with trees planted for major events.  I’m sure i’ve missed some.

Two tree were planted and a memorial unveiled on September 12, 2013. The idea came from local Kurdish exile Ahmed Jaff.

Park Methodist Church was design by W.J. Morley & Son of Bradford.

It was built in 1904, I don’t know the exact date it stopped being used as a church, but I recall it being converted into a pub in the 1990s.

Lawson Infants School, Cargo Fleet

This building from 1927 was the infants block of Lawson School, the main building was long since demolished.

Marton Hall

Continuing the series of lost buildings from Rev. Atkinsons ‘History of Cleveland Ancient and Modern’. Marton Hall was built for ironmaster Henry Bolckow in the 1850s

After falling into disrepair, it remained in Stewart Park until demolition started, during which on the 4th June 1960 it burnt down, a mystery which was only recently solved in 2012

Cannon Lake, Albert Park, Middlesbrough

Between 1866 and 1947 Middlesbrough’s Trophy Cannon stood by the Upper Lake in Albert Park, which became known as ‘Cannon Lake’.

Beresford House / Park View, Grove Hill

These two identical houses were built 1865-67 for Thomas Vaughan.

No 274 Marton Road was known as Beresford House.

In 1889 it was onwed by Marmaduke Watson Proudlock who was the general manager of the Teesside Iron and Engine Works.
The next owner was Colonel Penry William who renamed it Consett House, he was later to become MP for Middlesbrough in 1910. In later years it has served as a Salvation Army Home.

The neighbouring Park View was originally owned by Sir Joseph Calvert (one time Mayor of Middlesbrough), it became a medical centre in 1932 under Dr William Irwin.

Middlesbrough Fire Station

Middlesbrough Fire Station dates from 1939 and carries the Middlesbrough coat of arms.

It is due to be replaced soon, the facade was considered for listing by English Heritage on two occasions but it was ‘not considered to be of sufficient quality’.
